What is the FIRE number and how do I calculate mine?

Your FIRE number is the total amount you need invested to live off your portfolio. A common starting point is 25 times your annual spending. For example, if you spend $40,000 per year, your FIRE number is about $1,000,000. This is based on the 4% rule from the Trinity Study — the idea that you can safely withdraw 4% of your portfolio each year without running out of money.
